Our problem is that we are sinful and God is Holy. He is so Holy that he can not be in the presence of sinners.
Romans 3:22-23
There is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.
Also Romans 3:10
There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Isaiah 59:2
But your iniquites have separated you from your God...
There is a great gulf between sinful man and a Holy God. We do not deserve to be with God. There is no bridge that man can build on his own to come into God's presence. Man often tries good works, charity, education, or philosophy or good morals or even devout religion to bridge this gap. But we fall short because He is so Holy we can never measure up in our own strength. Our bridges are just too short.
Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
But, God says, I have provided the way in Jesus Christ. I have bridged that gulf for you. God says that He
put our sins on Him so that we do not have to pay the penalty for our sin. He was perfect and did not deserve to die and be separated from God the Father. So He could pay the price for us. He bridged that gulf for us. And to prove to us that Christ is the savior, God the Father, after three days, even raised Christ from the dead.
John 3:16
God loved the world so much, that He gave His one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him may not be lost, but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8,9
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were sill sinners, Christ died for us.
1 Peter 3:18
For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
