Is God a crutch? Sometimes a particularly confident agnostic or atheist will proclaim that our faith in God is merely a psychological cutch for the weak minded. My response is that my God isn't a crutch. He is THE crutch and being we are all hopelessly crippled spiritually that is Good news!
My crutch will never fail. He will never leave me nor forsake me. He gives me faith, hope, love, joy, peace, and eternal life. My crutch strengthens and protects me. I don't have to drink, snort, smoke or inject my crutch. My crutch will not rise or fall with the interest rates. My crutch cannot be stolen, broken, burned, or rusted. My crutch will never divorce me or disappoint me. My crutch won't infect me with an S.T.D. My crutch will never downsize me, give me a pay cut or fire me. My crutch does not come with a remote control that I will lose nor does he take a commercial break. My crutch won't disrespect me, or forget me when I'm older and in need of care. I don't need cards, crystals, or a game from Milton Bradley to access my crutch. My crutch won't leave me with bad knees or an aching back. He doesn't care if I dress cool. He won't charge me, advertise to me, or run out of gas on me. My crutch can not be taken away by death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither in the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation! My crutch doesn't just prop me up. He holds me up with his strong loving arms. With my crutch I can not only stand and walk but someday I will fly! So is God a crutch? Yes but he is the only true crutch in a world that offers false crutches that crumble beneath the weight of a crippled race.
